School kids build a new potting table for Stephen

ConneXu is excited to be collaborating with the Edge Workshop Mobile Wood Working in Tauranga to help solve everyday challenges through wood working, metal work and carpentry.

The Edge Mobile Wood Work Shop is a programme of BB, a not-for-profit that runs a mobile wood workshop in local primary and intermediate schools that don’t have their own workshops, offering wood working classes as part of their practical learning curriculum.

At the same time, ConneXu Partner Stephen was in need of an outdoor potting table that could fit his wheelchair underneath while putting pots on top, to allow him to work in his garden and keep things tidy.

Seeing an opportunity to work together, ConneXu Tauranga Outcomes Lead Wesley McLay approached The Edge Workshop’s Stu Thompson about a potential project to build Stephen’s table.

“It seemed like a good fit – the kids get to learn skills and how to build things out of wood, while Stephen got a potting table made especially for his needs,” says Wesley.

Two schools were involved in the potting table build - Welcome Bay Primary School and Tauranga Intermediate School.

Stephen was so happy to receive his new table and is excited to be using it in his garden.

Meanwhile, the kids have moved onto another project making bird houses and a concrete bird bath for another ConneXu partner, which will be delivered in another few weeks.
